I provide a safe, therapeutic environment where students can take risks and ask questions that they may not want to ask in school. I address both the written and unwritten rules of school to help the student with academic and social learning. My underlying philosophy is students will learn if the methods, materials and expectations align with their learning style. My services are planned and delivered with this in mind.

For students:
I work one on one with students in my office in Weston, Florida. I provide remediation support in reading, math, writing and executive function skills such as planning and organizing.
I use a variety of educational assessment tools to identify areas of need and track a student’s progress. Assessment is an ongoing process as I work with a student. There is an initial assessment during the first few sessions to establish a starting point for our work together. Every session is an opportunity for observation of progress which informs our work.
Many students come to an educational therapist with anxiety that is the result of school and social difficulties. The therapeutic environment allows students to explore the way that the interaction of learning and emotions impacts them. Together we investigate strategies for managing anxiety and other emotions so they support learning.

Research and Evidence Based Approach:

I work with the student and family to identify gaps in learning. We work together to fill those gaps. My work is informed by research and evidence based structured methods.

Reading: Current research about reading guides provides the basis for each student’s customized intervention. Programs such as LiPS®, Seeing Stars®, RAVE-O® and Great Leaps® guide the core of my work. I supplement these programs with content that matches the reading level and interests of the student.

Math: I use conceptual techniques such as On Cloud Nine® as well as engaging technology. These are blended with the curriculum used by the student’s school and other high interest materials.

Writing: A blend of techniques informed by the 6 + Traits of Writing and current research based methods inform the work I do with students.

Executive Function Skills: I use a variety of strategies depending on the areas of need. I use methods that help to teach self-directed planning and time management in order to make tasks more manageable and less overwhelming.

Assessment: I use a variety of educational assessment tools to identify areas of need and track a student’s progress. Assessment is an ongoing process as I work with a student. There is an initial assessment during the first few sessions to establish a starting point for our work together. Every session is an opportunity for observation or progress which informs our work.

Parent Support: I work with you as a parent to help you embrace your role as your child’s case manager. You are expected to manage your children’s day to day needs, make decisions about their educational, therapeutic and social needs. I participate in academic meetings, partner with schools, identify professionals to work with your student and help you understand and interpret the information you are given by the many people who work with your students.

Transition Planning: As your child moves through High School, planning for the future becomes an important part of your work as a parent. I work with families to prepare students for the move towards independence. Some students are college bound, but not ready yet. Some students need a break from school before attending college. Some students are more suited to non-college alternatives. I can help bolster your child’s skills and help your child to be ready to make the first step towards adulthood.

Ethics: As a professional member of the Association of Educational Therapists, I am bound by the code of ethics of the association as well as Florida’s mandatory reporting laws. I provide a safe, therapeutic environment in which a student can take risks and ask questions that he may not be willing to ask in school. Occasionally as we work together, it may become clear that a student needs support beyond what an Educational Therapist can offer. When this occurs, I help the student and family find a provider to meet that need.
